Lenny Lyles was a defensive back who played 12 seasons in the NFL and started in Super Bowl III for the Baltimore Colts. Following a successful collegiate career at the University of Louisville, where he was known for his return skills, the 6-2, 202-pound Lyles was selected by the Baltimore Colts in the first round of the 1958 NFL Draft. He spent one year with the Colts before joining the 49ers in 1959. After two seasons in San Francisco, Lyles returned to the Colts where he remained until the end of his career in 1969. He finished his pro career with 2,161 return yards and averaged 26.7 yards per return. This lot features Lyles’ game-worn Baltimore Colts helmet, circa 1963-64, two seasons in which he was busy playing right-side cornerback. This was also the time period when Lyles made four of his career 16 interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns. The vintage Riddell suspension helmet features the Colts horseshoe logo on either side, separated by the trademark Navy blue strip down the middle. Lyles’ uniform No. 43 adorns the back of the helmet. Facemask and ear pads are all intact and appear to be the originals. Outstanding game use is evident throughout with paint transfers showing from numerous on-the-field collisions. The helmet was sourced from the estate of a Baltimore attorney.
