Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Don Drysdale spent 14 seasons with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers from 1956 to 1969, but during that time he also served his country as a U.S. Army Reserves between October of 1957 and April of 1958. The then-20-year-old went through basic training exercises at Fort Dix in New Jersey before rejoining the Dodgers for the ’58 campaign where he struck out 131 batters on his way to collecting 12 victories. This lot features Drysdale’s Armed Forces of the United States identification card which was issued on October 11, 1957, and expired on April 5, 1958. The front of the laminated card, which measures 2.5" high by 3.5" wide, includes a head shot of Drysdale sporting a crew cut, his grade as “PVT” (Private) in the U.S. Army Reserve, and his service number: BR12539482. It also includes Drysdale’s crisp signature in blue ink. The reverse side of the card includes a pair of right and left index finger fingerprints, his date of birth (23 Jul 36), weight (200) and height (6’ 6”), as well as his car number: 7036930. A very memorable, vintage keepsake from the life of one of Major League Baseball’s greatest pitchers ever.
