This lot offers an excellent grouping of a Jackie Robinson Memorial statue and medal from the unveiling of the Jackie Robinson Statue unveiling at the Rose Bowl Stadium on November 29th, 2017 in Pasadena, California. This grouping derives directly from the Fred Claire Collection. The 13" tall statue is a replica of the statue that was unveiled in front of the Rose Bowl commemorating Jackie's time at Pasadena City College. The front of the statue reads "JACKIE ROBINSON" while the rear features "HANLON SCULPTURE STUDIOS" engraved in the base. Jackie running with the 'Heisman Pose' is the main attraction of the statue. The medal that accompanies the statue features a depiction of the Rose Bowl with the text "JACKIE ROBINSON STATUE DEDICATION NOVEMBER 29, 2017". The rear features an image of Jackie as well as the text "CLEVELAND ELEMENTARY, WASHINGTON JUNIOR HIGH, JOHN MUIR H.S, P.J.C., UCLA".
Fred Claire was a longtime member of the Dodgers front office. He was the general manager of the team from 1987 to 1998. After a dismal 1987 season, Claire built the team into a contender overnight. After acquiring players like Kirk Gibson, the Dodgers won the 1988 World Series over the heavily favored Oakland A's in just five games. A portion of the proceeds from each of Claire's items in this auction will go to the City of Hope.
