This is easily one of the most extraordinary of all T206 front and advertising back combinations. Red
Hindu backs are striking, unusual, and extremely rare. Even a sample of a common player is one of
the most difficult to find of all T206 advertising backs. Examples featuring key Hall of Famers are almost
unheard of, especially considering that the total checklist of confirmed T206 Red Hindu back examples to
date is approximately 50 different subjects. The T206 Ty Cobb red portrait pose is the only T206 Cobb pose
that is known with a red Hindu advertising back. Prior to the discovery of this specimen along with a second
example in “The Southern Fairway Find” (VG PSA 3 example sold for $45,510 in our December 2012 auction),
only two other Red Hindu Cobb’s were known to us, including a PSA 4 example that sold for over $38,000 at
auction in 2009. It has been previously noted that the T206 Red Hindu Ty Cobb is many times rarer than even
the famous T206 Ty Cobb with Ty Cobb Tobacco advertising on the reverse, of which approximately twelve
examples are known, or the Uzit back Cobb, which is also an incredible rarity.
This sternly graded Ty Cobb (Red Portrait) presents beautifully with dark, rich color and a perfect image.
Centering is near perfect all the way around with both top corners VG and the bottom corners about G.
Surfaces on both the front and the rare Red Hindu ad back are quite clean. Subtle diagonal creasing at the
lower right hand corner does not break the front surface paper. The lower left corner has several similar
diagonal creases that also do no disrupt the surface. With eye appeal that far exceeds the technical grade,
this is unquestionably one of the premier T206 rare-back cards discovered in recent hobby history. We are
proud to introduce it here for the first time.
