On September 9, 1959 Yankee Stadium held its first official “Yogi Berra Day”. Yankees announcer Mel Allen acted as the master of ceremonies before the Red Sox / Yankees game. Yogi had to brush aside tears from his eyes as he accepted gifts from the Yankees organization including a new station wagon, a color television, and dancing lessons; hats for wife Carmen Berra and an encyclopedia set and model trains for his boys. The Yankees won the game 3-1. Often regarded as one of the greatest catchers to ever play in the Majors, this lot is for Yogi Berra’s 9/19/1959 “Yogi Berra Day’ Handmade Silver cigarette case presented to Yogi at Yankee Stadium. Inside etched on the silver hood is “Yogi Berra Day from Baseball for Italy Yankees Stadium 9-19-59”. The inside contains two square wooden holders for cigarettes. Overall this one of a kind artifact is in NM condition. This item comes from Yogi Berra’s personal collection with a signed letter from an authorized family member of the Yogi Berra Estate.
