This large 25" by 40" photograph mounted on board is the quintessential image of “The Big Train." Still displayed in its original black wood frame, this piece remains in the same original state as when it hung at Griffith Stadium in Washington D.C., the home ball park for the great pitcher during his entire Hall of Fame career. Henry Gichner’s identification tag is attached on the back of the wall hanging. Gichners Company tore down the Stadium in 1965 when the “expansion” Senators found a new home at DC Stadium. The lot also comes with a tag that was once attached to the back of the frame indicating that at one time the piece was “the property of the Walter Johnson Base Ball Game Inc. of Washington D.C.” It is likely that the image used on the box cover for the Walter Johnson Game produced by them was reproduced from this very image. Considering its size, excellent condition, and unique provenance, this is certainly among the finest Walter Johnson display pieces extant. LOA from Walter Johnson’s grandson, Hank Thomas.
