For fans of the Left Coast's preeminent Hall of Fame manager, here is a matted and framed display featuring a jovial Walt Alston flashing the peace sign alongside individual matted cutouts that showcase a personal check with his autograph and a nameplate with his vital statistics and some career tidbits. All three elements are set off in Dodger Blue and White matting to good effect, all nicely protected in a plexiglass and black-wood frame that brings the overall dimensions to a whopping 20-by-15 inches. For those of you scoring at home - and you know who you are - the personal check in question is for $5,500, made out to a quaint little organization called The Internal Revenue Service. In the memo section Walt indicated that this princely sum constituted a mere %25 percent of his overall tax liability for 1979, a time when the top marginal tax rate was, uh, 70 percent. Malaise indeed.
