In spite of his contentious demeanor Ty Cobb proved to be an accommodating autograph signer throughout his life. Interestingly, as abundant as examples of his signature are on objects such as baseballs, photos, checks, letters and other paper items, it is exceptionally rare to find his autograph on a bat. This stands to reason to some degree due to logistical limitations of transporting such an object, but the extreme rarity of Cobb signed bats seems to exceed the rationale of logistics alone. Presented here is one of the finest Ty Cobb autographed bats we have ever encountered with regard to overall presentation quality. The medium is a 34” H&B model 125x bat. At first glance the bat appears to have a blank barrel, but closer inspection reveals faint partial player name “Sol…”. The bat does show evidence of game use, but it’s defining feature is the dark black execution of the inscription that resides on the center of the bat’s unlabeled side. Cobb’s non-personalized salutation, “With Best Wishes Ty Cobb” is rendered in jet black ink. Relative to Cobb single signed baseballs of parallel quality and condition, this bat is infinitely more rare. It originates from the CY Jones Collection. Jones was a friend of Cobb’s, among many other former prominent athletes. SCP Auctions has previously sold a number Cobb signed pieces from the Cy Jones Collection including a Cobb bat signed in a similar manner in our November, 2010 auction for $40,388.

Includes a full LOA from PSA/DNA.
