This lot features a trio of champions’ trophies – all made of sterling silver – earned in the late 1980s by horses that were owned by the late Eugene V. Klein in thoroughbred races held at the Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey.

The first trophy, which stands eight inches tall, celebrates a victory in 1986 by two-year-old fillie “Burnished Bright” in the 5.5 furlongs Colleen Stakes. The three-handled, sterling silver trophy (480 grams) is engraved on the front with the following text: “COLLEEN STAKES, Monmouth Park, WON BY BURNISHED BRIGHT, July 22, 1986.” The second trophy, which stands seven inches tall, is a two-handled, sterling silver beauty (524g) that includes the following text engraved across the front: “COLLEEN STAKES, Monmouth Park, WON BY LOST KITTY, July 29, 1987.”

The third and final trophy from this impressive threesome is one that honors a thrilling victory by “Open Mind” at the New Jersey Breeders Stakes, which was held on August 30, 1988. Ridden to victory by jockey Angel Cordero Jr., Open Mind defeated the rest of the field with a winning time of 1:46.60. The front of the three-handled sterling silver trophy (446g), which stands five inches tall and measures five inches in diameter, is engraved as follows: “N.J. BREEDERS STAKES, Monmouth Park, WON BY OPEN MIND, August 30, 1988.”

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
