San Diego’s Tony Gwynn was one of baseball’s best hitters ever. The lefty-swinging batsman, nicknamed “Mr. Padre,” had a career .338 batting average, won eight National League batting titles and played in the franchise's only two World Series. And it was in 1994 when Gwynn came the closest to breaking the magical .400 plateau, only to have the season end abruptly in early August due to a players’ strike. Regardless, Gwynn was hitting .394 and seemed poised to join the likes of Ted Williams and Bill Terry in the elite .400 Club. During that season, Gwynn earned the San Diego Padres United States Postal Service (USPS) Player of the Month Award for April after hitting .395 for the month. This lot includes the prestigious USPS plaque awarded to Gwynn. The black marble award measures 12” wide by 10” high and weighs 5.5 pounds.

Includes Letter of Authenticity from the Gwynn Family.

A portion of the proceeds generated by the Tony Gwynn Collection will be donated to the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation. The TAG Foundation is a non-profit, 5013(c) charity dedicated to creating and supporting programs that enhance opportunities for youth to become healthy, educated, and productive citizens. The TAG Foundation was organized in San Diego in 1995 by Tony’s wife, Alicia. For more information, visit www.tagwynn2.org.
