On September 14, 1998, the San Diego Padres improved their season record to 95-56 with a 4-3 victory over the visiting Chicago Cubs. Though the team was still a month away from competing in only its second ever World Series, the team’s leader, the late Tony Gwynn, was still doing what he always did: getting a hit. In this particular game, “Mr. Padre” went 1-for-4 with an RBI double in the seventh inning off Cubs southpaw Felix Heredia. This lot features the actual game ball that Gwynn rocked for career hit No. 2,915. He would finish out his big league tenure three season later with 3,141 total hits to his credit. The Official national League (Coleman) baseball shows serious game use and toning and includes bat contact marks as well. The ball is marked in pen with “CHI” and “#2915” on the panel opposite the sweet spot, while Gwynn signed on the sweet spot in what is now faded black ink.

Includes Letter of Provenance form the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Autograph pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
