For 20 seasons, from 1982 to 2001, San Diego’s Tony Gwynn was one of the most prolific hitters in all of baseball. Of his 3,141 career hits, Gwynn swatted a total of 543 doubles. This lot includes the official Major League baseball (Selig) that Gwynn hit to record his 529th career double which tied Al Oliver for 24th on the baseball’s all-time list. The hit occurred on May 26, 2000, against right-hander Hideki Irabu of the then-Montreal Expos. It came in the bottom of the third inning of San Diego’s 6-2 victory at home. Gwynn went 2-for-3 on the day. The game-used baseball shows wear and includes special writing in black ink to call out the milestone: “TIED 24th IN DOUBLES 5/26.”

Includes Letter of Authenticity from the Gwynn Family.

A portion of the proceeds generated by the Tony Gwynn Collection will be donated to the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation. The TAG Foundation is a non-profit, 5013(c) charity dedicated to creating and supporting programs that enhance opportunities for youth to become healthy, educated, and productive citizens. The TAG Foundation was organized in San Diego in 1995 by Tony’s wife, Alicia. For more information, visit www.tagwynn2.org.
