In 1998, Tony Gwynn batted .321 and helped the San Diego Padres record a franchise-best 98 regular-season wins. The Padres reached the World Series that year after defeating both the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves in the National League playoffs. However, the Padres lost to the New York Yankees in a four-game sweep, despite the fact that Gwynn hit .500 (8-for-16) in the World Series. This lot includes a pair of items honoring that eventful season. First, we have a beautifully engraved San Diego Padres pewter commemorative plate celebrating the club’s 1998 N.L. pennant (the team’s second overall) with 35 engraved signatures of Gwynn his '98 teammates including Sterling Hitchcock (inscribed "NLCS - MVP", slugger Greg Vaughn ("50 HR"), pitcher Kevin Brown ("257 K’s") and closer Trevor Hoffman ("53 saves"). The plate measures 14.5” across and weighs around 4 lbs. It comes essentially unused in MT condition. The second item is a San Diego Padres themed glass plaque that reads "THE 1998 NATIONAL LEAGUE WEST CHAMPIONS" on top with "The Padre Wives are the Best in the West" on the bottom. The curves designed to stand on its own measures 6" by 7.5" and comes in Excellent condition. Only blemish is a tiny chip off the bottom left corner.
