Presented here is a scarce and unique 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics 2nd Place Silver Medal awarded for the sport of Badminton in what was known as an exhibition year for the sport. Aside from the 1972 Summer Olympics, Badminton was also included in the 1988 Seoul Summer games as a demonstration sport, meaning that it was not officially part of the Olympic program. The sport would not make its debut on the Olympic Program until 1992.
During the 1988 appearance, there were a total of five events: men's singles and doubles, women's singles and doubles, and mixed doubles. Competitions would take place on September 19th, 1988 at the Seoul National Univeristy Gymnasium where South Korea would take three of the gold medals and China the other two.
This silver medal measures 4.8mm in thickness, 60mm in diameter, and weighs 160 grams. It features the official mascot of the Seoul Olympic games, Hodori, playing badminton on the obverse and the olympic logo on the reverse with "XXIV Olympiad Seoul 1988". This piece is in excellent condition and strike with a minor scratch near the foot of the olympic mascot on the obverse which, detracts very little from the medal's overall exceptional eye appeal.
A very scare piece that includes its original presentation ribbon and velvet case.
