This lot of varied correspondence from Negro Leaguers to famed writer John Holway was received by the historian during the 1970’s into the 80’s. Within this collection is a handwritten letter from Hall of Famer Hilton Smith, a note of appreciation from Willie Wells, a Satchel Paige signed check and Gold Hall of Fame plaque, more than 20 pieces of correspondence from Buck Leonard, and 5 letters from Monte Irvin. Additionally, there is correspondence from stars Wilmer Fields, Gene Benson, Jim Canada, Bill Evans, George Giles (6 notes), William Cornelius, “Lefty” Mathis, Webster McDonald, Clinton Thomas, Bill Wright, “Rats” Henderson and more. A secretarially signed note from Turkey Stearns (with some baseball content) is also included.
