Hall of Famer Gabby Hartnett was a durable catcher for the Chicago Cubs who played 19 seasons in the Windy City (1922 to ’40). Hartnett’s minty black fountain pen ink signature – “Leo ‘Gabby’ Hartnett” – spans from the West panel well into the sweet spot area of this ONL (Heydler) baseball. Dating from 1928 to ’33, the ball has a uniform clear coat applied to it, thus preserving its condition and providing for an exceptional eye-appealing patina. Hartnett single-signed baseballs from any era are rare with those from his playing days virtually nonexistent. This gem is one of the finest of the few examples we have seen from his playing days.
