The San Diego Chargers football team landed in “America’s Finest City” in 1961 and played there through the 2016 NFL season. In its first 32 seasons, the team honored 23 different players with its coveted Most Valuable Player award, which is captured with this lot. The organization bestowed the distinction on seven different players multiple times during that time period: Lance Alworth (1965-66); John Hadl (1967, ’68 and ’71); Charlie Joiner (1976 and ’83); John Jefferson (1978 and ’80); Dan Fouts (1979, ’81 and ’82); Gary Anderson (1986 and ’88); and Ronnie Harmon (1991-92).

The two-tiered wooden trophy features a black, engraved plaque on its base that reads: “SAN DIEGO CHARGERS MOST VALUABLE PLAYER.” In the center, on either side, is a black engraved plaque that calls out each of the players per season (1961 to 1982 and 1983 to 1992). Positioned on top of the second wooden tier is a two-handled metal trophy upon which stands a ball carrier in full uniform. The trophy weighs 14 pounds.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
