The Philadelphia Athletics became the Kansas City Athletics on November 8, 1954, when Arnold M. Johnson’s purchase of the stock of the Philadelphia A’s was approved by the directors of the league. The team played its games in Kansas City starting with the 1955 MLB season all the way through the 1967 campaign, at which time the team moved again, this time to Oakland. This hard cover book, entitled “The Kansas City Athletics,” is 222 pages long and was written by Kansas City Star sports editor Ernest Mehl. It tells the story of the team’s arrival and influence on Kansas City. What’s more, one of the up-and-coming players for the team during its time in K.C. was right fielder Roger Maris who played for the Athletics for half of the 1958 season and all of 1959 before landing with the Yankees. Maris has signed and personalized the inside page of the book in blue ink by writing: “To Barry Best Regards Roger Maris.” The signature is a solid 9/10.
