These two yearbooks, from the Yankee teammates' high schools, give a glimpse of the future sluggers in their formative years. However, they do not predict greatness on the baseball diamond for either one. The 1947 Commerce, OK high school yearbook is entitled "Bengal Tales." Mickey's head shot is in the sophomore section. On the back page, he has signed in pencil, along with a number of his classmates. Mantle was an all-around athlete in school, playing basketball as well as football (he was offered a football scholarship by the University of Oklahoma) in addition to his first love, baseball. Shanley High School, run by the Catholic diocese in Fargo, North Dakota, is maybe best known for one of the greatest schoolboy football dynasties ever. In 30 years, Coach Sid Cichy led Shanley to 15 state championships, 11 undefeated seasons and a 59-game winning streak. He also coached Roger Maras (he changed the spelling later) in baseball. However, in the 1952 Deacons yearbook, the only photo of Maras is in a basketball uniform, and is signed underneath in blue ink, "Lots of Luck, Roger Maras". Both yearbooks are in very good condition overall with some wear to the covers and loose pages. Both have inscriptions and signatures from other students as well. LOA from PSA/DNA.
