Red Auerbach met his wife Dorothy when they were both undergraduates at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. The were married on June 5, 1941. Although Red spent much of his time living in Boston while Dorothy and their two daughters lived in Washington, D.C. the couple had a close relationship for 59 years. Red once said of Dorothy, "She didn't like to read the papers because if there was anything in there about me that was even a little bit negative it made her mad. She was very smart, someone whose opinions I always respected and listened to. But she was also very supportive of whatever I wanted to do ..." This beautiful wood pipe stand/tobacco humidor features a beautifully inlaid lid with an engraved placard that reads, "Dot to Arnold June 5, 1942." The piece, commemorating their first wedding anniversary, holds six of Red's fine quality pipes. The stand and pipes all show moderate, but not excessive usage wear. Includes a letter of provenance from the Auerbach estate.
