The Boston Celtics was the first major sports franchise to go public. The Boston Celtics Limited Partnership offered investors a chance to own shares - what the partnership called "units" - in the company in 1986. No individual had more to do with raising the value of the Boston Celtics than Red Auerbach. Auerbach became a limited partner in the Celtics franchise on December 5, 1986 with the acquisition of 2,600,000 "units". In commemoration, Red received this desk clock. Engraved on the back of the brass case is the inscription, "2,600,000 Units Boston Celtics Limited Partnership - Smith Barney, Harris, Upham & Co. December 5, 1986." A Celtics logo and Red's initials "R.A." are engraved on the top. The clock stands 4 1/2" tall and remains in working order. Includes a letter of provenance from the Auerbach estate.
