The city that gave birth to the legendary basketball career of Red Auerbach paid homage to him on March 19, 1966. Prior to his last game at Madison Square Garden in his farewell season, New York had its own version of “Red Auerbach Night”. The New York Knicks presented him with this 12 1/2" by 15" plaque. The plaque reads, "To Arnold (Red) Auerbach Boston Celtics from The The New York Knickerbockers for his long and meritorious service to the National Basketball Association on the occasion of his final appearance as coach at Madison Square Garden Saturday evening, March 19, 1966." This plaque held great meaning to Red as evidenced by the place of honor it held on the wall of his Boston office (see catalogue pgs. 60-61). Includes a letter of provenance from the Auerbach estate.
