St. Louis veteran Bob Pettit and Minneapolis rookie Elgin Baylor became the first players to tie for MVP honors as they led the West to a 124-108 triumph over the East at Detroit's Cobo Arena. Pettit outscored Baylor, 25-24, and outrebounded the rookie forward, 16-11, but the two divided the MVP ballots equally. Cincinnati's Jack Twyman also contributed 18 points as the West won for the third time in nine games. Paul Arizin of Philadelphia led the East with 16 points, 1 more than Ken Sears of the New York Knicks. As coach of the East team Red Auerbach received this honorary clock. The electric clock is housed in black marble atop a 12" wide black marble base. To the left of the clock is a cast metal basketball player atop a two-columned pedestal. An engraved placard affixed to the front of the base reads, "NBA East-West All-Star Game Detroit - Jan. 23, 1959 Red Auerbach." The clock shows no structural faults and remains in working order. Includes a letter of provenance from the Auerbach estate.
