The San Diego Chargers have now relocated to Los Angeles, the same city they started in back in 1960. During the course of their time in America’s Finest City, however, the team produced many outstanding individual football players and team leaders. This lot features a pair of “Special Teams” trophies that were awarded to some high octane Chargers players who excelled in that phase of bone-crushing football demonstrated by head-on collisions.

The first trophy, which measures 18” high, includes a two-tiered wooden base upon which sits a brass football seemingly of regulation size. On its front and side, the base features two engraved black plaques that call out the recipients of the award by year spanning the 1978 to 1986 seasons. The front plaque, which reads “SAN DIEGO CHARGERS Special Teams Player of the Year,” calls out the 1986 award winner, Ty Allert, while the side plaque names the other recipients including Artie Owens (1978); Pete Shaw (1979); Hank Bauer (1980 and ’81); Ray Preston (1982); Derrie Nelson (1983 and ‘84); and Vince Osby (1985).

The second trophy was awarded to Charger Hank Bauer from the NFL Alumni for his outstanding play in 1982. Made of beveled glass it stands 13” tall and nine inches wide and includes the following text etched into the glass: “NFL ALUMNI 1982 SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE YEAR HANK BAUER.”

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
