The Del Mar Futurity is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Del Mar Racetrack in Del Mar, California. A Grade I event since 2007, the race is open to horses, age two, willing to race seven furlongs on dirt and currently offers a purse of $300,000. In 1984, the race was won by “Saratoga Six," a horse ridden by Angel Cordero Jr., trained by D. Wayne Lukas and owned by Eugene V. Klein. The winning time was 1:36.00. The Del Mar Debutante Stakes, meanwhile, is open to two-year-old fillies and is run each year in early September. A Grade I event since 1999, the Debutante is raced on dirt at a distance of seven furlongs and also offers a purse of $300,000. In 1984, the race was won by “Fiesta Lady,” a horse ridden by Laffit Pincay Jr., trained by D. Wayne Lukas and also owned by Klein. The winning time was 1:38.80.

This lot features the two championship trophies that were awarded for those two special races. The first, which is made of sterling silver (hallmarked on bottom), weighs around 2.5 pounds (1,154 grams to be exact) and stands 14” tall, celebrating the Del Mar Debutante won by Fiesta Lady. The two-handled trophy, which sports horseshoes for handles, showcases a horse and rider on board the removable top and reads “DEL MAR 1984 Del Mar Debutante” across the front. The back is engraved with “Winner Fiesta Lady, Owner Mr. & Mrs. Eugene V. Klein.”

The second silver trophy (not sterling silver hallmarked but having a similar look and feel) weighs over three pounds (1,390g) and stands 16 inches tall, stretching 12 inches across at the tips of its two-handled presentation. It too features a horse and rider on top and reads “Del Mar Futurity 1984 Del Mar” across the front and “Winner Saratoga Six, Owner Eugene Klein” across the back.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
