On May 16, 1986, the Maryland Jockey Club Pimlico’s The
Back-Eye Susan one-mile-and-a-sixteenth’s race was won by “Family Style” – the three-year-old fillie belonging to the team of owner Eugene V. Klein. Posting a winning time of 1:43.60, she was ridden by jockey Chris McCarron. This lot
features the sterling silver championship bowl, manufactured by Stieff, which was awarded to the winners. The sterling silver hallmarked bowl weighs two pounds (922 grams to be exact) and stands six inches tall with a diameter of 11 inches. One side of the bowl is engraved with the following text: “WON BY FAMILY STYLE, OWNER EUGENE V. KLEIN.” The other side reads: “MARYLAND JOCKEY CLUB PIMLICO The BLACK-EYED SUSAN $100,000 Added Three-Year-Old Fillies, One Mile and a Sixteenth, May 16, 1986.” The bowl shows
its 32 years in existence with tarnishing throughout its surface.
