In 1988, Kentucky Derby Winner “Winning Colors” won plenty of races as she made her way to the finish line at Churchill Downs. In fact, this lot features one of those earlier championship trophies the large filly earned from the 1988 Santa Anita Oaks race at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, a contest in which she completed the one-mile-and-one-sixteenth race in 1:42:0.
The trophy presented here measures 11.25” tall and features a two-handled, gold-washed sterling silver cup that rests atop a large green marble base with an engraved gold plaque reading: “March 13, 1988, One Mile & One-Sixteenth, Won By WINNING COLORS, Mr. & Mrs. Eugene V. Klein, Owner, D. Wayne Lukas, Trainer, Gary Stevens, Jockey, Time: 1:42:0.” The front of the two-handled trophy is engraved “SANTA ANITA OAKS” and those words are centered above the engraved logo of Santa Anita Park. The whole trophy including the base weighs 13
pounds; the sterling silver cup alone weighs 1098 grams. Some tarnishing is evident inside the trophy cup as well as across the engraved plaque on the base. The
bottom is hallmarked "Sterling Silver" by "Kirk Stieff."
Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
