Mark McGwire was a power-hitting first baseman for both the Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals. “Big Mac,” as he was affectionately called, also turned in a season to remember in 1998 as a member of the Cardinals. That season was the one in which both McGwire and Chicago’s Sammy Sosa engaged in one of baseball’s all-time great home runs races, where they both were on track to break Roger Maris’s longstanding single-season mark of 61 round-trippers (set in 1961). In the end, McGwire belted 70 home runs, while Sosa launched 66, both breaking the old record set by Maris. This game-worn cap of McGwire’s was a rarity in its own right. In 1998, St. Louis introduced a cap featuring a single cardinal bird perched on a bat worn only by the players during Sunday home games. McGwire has signed the Authentic Diamond Collection New Ear cap (size 7½) in black marker on the top of the bill and added his uniform number (#25). The cap includes the No. 25 on the underside of the bill, which would have been an indication to McGwire that this was his cap if it ever came off during a game. It shows moderate to light wear.

Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
