ADDENDUM: This is not a traditional German "driver's license" as indicated in the printed catalog.

Offered here is Luz Long's athletics license for Leipziger Sport Club dated April 27, 1935. This important identification card allowed him to compete in organized athletics competitions throughout Germany as a member of LSC. The word führerausweis at the top literally translates to "driver's license", although the family assured us that this was officially his athlete ID card as a member of LSC. The document has his date of birth ("27. April 1913") and residence ("Leipzig"). To the best of our knowledge, ist befähigt Ausflüge diefes Vereins zu Zweclen der Jugendpflege fachverftandig zu leiten translates to "is able to expertly lead excursions of this association for the purpose of youth care."

The date this ID card was issued was Long's 22nd birthday. He has signed the document underneath a cut-out photo of himself on the left side. Another official's signature is alongside in matching black fountain ink. The word unterfchrift means "signature"; Der Austweis ist auf Verlangen jederzeit translates to "the ID card is available at any time upon request." The document has been officially stamped by "Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft 20" [German Reichsbahn Company] at the top left and by another authority on Long's photo.

The lot includes a letter of provenance from the Long family.
