"A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives." Jackie Robinson once said. By that standard, few people -- and no athlete -- this century has impacted more lives. Robinson lit the torch of racial equality in sports and passed it on to several generations of African-American athletes. Two years removed from breaking major league baseball’s color barrier, Robinson appeared in his second major card issue produced by the Bowman Gum Co. Perhaps presented to Robinson as a sample, or by a fan, this example of Jackie’s 1949 Bowman card #50 bearing his visage was pleasing enough to him as to be kept by him as part of his personal collection. The remarkable keepsake has been anointed a VG 3 grade by PSA, with nice centering, fine print quality and bold color. An accompanying Letter of Authenticity from Robinson's widow, Rachel enabled the additional notation of provenance on the PSA label that the card is from the Jackie Robinson Estate. We know of no other baseball card with more direct or profound derivation from the player it bears.
Includes a LOA from Rachel Robinson.
