Presented here is a special September 20, 1947 Associated Press Type I photo entitled “Mainstays of the Dodgers Infield.” Dodger and civil rights icon Jackie Robinson is pictured with Pee Wee Reese, Eddie Stanky and Johnny “Spider” Jorgensen, all posed with bats in hand.
It is significant that this image is from Jackie’s groundbreaking rookie season with Brooklyn, where the dynamic Robinson was selected Rookie of the Year, snapped just days before the Dodgers advanced to the World Series to face the rival New York Yankees.
As a Type I photo, there are interesting markings and stamps on the back of the image, adding to its unique “moment in time” allure for baseballs aficionados.
