For Red Sox Nation, they know all too well the “blood, sweat and tears” that come with being devoted followers of their favorite sons. Here we present the “blood” part of that equation. A piece of sports history tied to an unprecedented comeback that ended “The Curse of the Bambino” in the fall of 2004, anchored by the gritty pitching of Boston hurler Curt Schilling.
Schilling had already established himself as a superstar on the mound in his years with the Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks. Who would have thought he could top his 2001 season when he helped lead the Diamondbacks past the dominant New York Yankees to win the World Series? But Curt joining the Boston Red Sox in 2004 took his game and stature in baseball to even greater heights.
In the postseason of 2004 Schilling ignored the advice of the physician who had mended the tendons of his right ankle and took to the mound, first in a crucial Game Six to hold off American League Championship Series elimination against the rival New York Yankees. Then again in Game Two of the World Series to claim the second victory in a four-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals.
TV broadcasts repeatedly locked in on the growing red stain at Schilling's push-off ankle as the star right-hander fought his way through the pain. By the time the Sox had completed their extraordinary eight-game run to turn the tide from a three-game ALCS deficit into a World Series sweep, “The “Bloody Sock” became a universally known reference point in sports folklore.
Here we have that ultimate “Sox sock.” The World Series Game Two baseball stocking, from October 24, 2004 at Fenway Park when the Red Sox beat the Cardinals 6-2 to take a 2-0 game lead in The Fall Classic. The legendary white tube sock remains mounted to its original backing from its Cooperstown display, which focuses on the dark splotches of Schilling’s blood. The last time this sock was offered, it brought $92,000 in 2013. A letter of provenance from Mr. Schilling himself is included.
