Our consignor Jerry Ankenbauer embarked on his autograph collecting journey in 1988. His first attempts were mailing to two of his favorite college basketball players of the day, Jay Burson of Ohio State and Hank Gathers of Loyola Marymount. When both responded to Jerry's request, not only with signatures but with motivational messages as well, Jerry was off and running on a collection of in-person and through the mail autographs that has now spanned over 30 years.
The season that Jerry heard back from Gathers, the LMU Lion accomplished the rare feat of leading the NCAA in both scoring and rebounding. Sadly, Hank Gathers passed away on the court while playing for LMU in March 1990, making his autograph quite rare. Fresh to the hobby, this has Beckett 10 Encapsulation and is an inscribed treasure from Hank.
