After knocking on the door of the Fall Classic with three straight N.L. East Division titles from 1976 to ‘78, the Philadelphia Phillies brain trust figured one last piece was needed to get them over the hump, so they made 1979 free-agent Pete Rose the highest-paid player in professional sports. The multi-talented switch-hitter dutifully moved from third to first base to accommodate perennial Gold Glover and future Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt. One year later at age 39, “Charlie Hustle” helped bring the long struggling franchise its first World Series Championship in nearly a century of existence. Presented here is the Hit King’s game worn home jersey from that triumphant 1980 season in the City of Brotherly Love. It would be Pete’s third and final World Series title, the culmination of another solid All-Star campaign in which he led the National League in doubles. His 185 hits would be his most in a single season from that point on as he marched towards Ty Cobb’s record.
The pinstriped knit shirt is properly tagged by Wilson on the left front tail with size 44 labeling and the ever-important "80-3" swatch denoting its year and set number. His No. “14” appears front and back, with the team’s classic “P” logo sewn on the left chest and “ROSE” ached on a white nameplate across the upper back. All letters and numbers come in burgundy tackle twill. A swatch sewn in the collar has "Rose” stitched in black. The zipper-up garment exhibits outstanding evidence of game use from the hard-nosed ballplayer with heavy pilling, light soiling, and several surface abrasions on both sides. The back numbers have significant scratches and contact marks. Rose has autographed the back ‘4’ with his final hit tally “4256” inscribed in bold silver marker. This is certainly one of the finest Rose gamers from his five-year Phillies tenure (1979-83). Includes letter from MEARS with a perfect A10 grade.
