In Game 5 of the 1917 Fall Classic, the Chicago White Sox beat the visiting New York Giants by a score of 8-5 to take a 3-2 series lead and bring them within a single victory of what would be their second World Championship. Shoeless Joe and the ChiSox were rescued by the tireless pitching efforts of Red Faber, who amazingly had a complete-game win in Game 2, pitched seven strong in a losing effort in Game 4, closed out Game 5, and threw another complete-game gem in the Game 6 clincher.
Only eight Game 5 ticket stubs have ever been encapsulated by PSA. Of those, five are "Authentic" and two are POOR 1. The highest graded is still just a GOOD 2. Offered here is the second highest rated stub from this pivotal Game 5 contest. A total of just 24 stubs from the entire 1917 World Series are accounted for in the PSA Pop Report. Apparently, not one full ticket exists.
The Comiskey Park grand stand reserved seat ($1.50) ticket has a clean perforated stub edge on the right with bold black print and relatively strong orange colors for being over a century old. It shows significant wear with two end-to-end vertical creases plus several other smaller creases and surface tears. The top and bottom edges are quite ruffled. All four corners are very rounded, albeit evenly. The back has a tiny narrow strip of paper loss. An important addition to any World Series ticket collection, this stub represents the apex of a controversial ballclub that in two years would give our National Pastime its biggest "black" eye in history.
