Featured here is a 1896 Athens Summer Olympic Games bronze participation medal presented to an athlete competing in the first modern Olympic Games. Designed by N. Lytras and minted by W. Pittner (Austria), it measures 50 mm in diameter and 4 mm thick and weighs 60 grams. The obverse shows a seated Nike, Goddess of Victory, holding a laurel wreath over Phoenix emerging from flames with Acropolis in the background. The reverse has the Greek legend surrounded by a wreath. Well-preserved for being struck over 120 years ago, it shows light wear and presents EX-MT/NM in our opinion.
