In 1976, led by Commissioner Bowie Kuhn, Major League Baseball conducted an election over several weeks to name baseball’s most memorable moment and its most memorable personality. Babe Ruth was America’s first sports celebrity, sweeping the nation off its feet during the Roaring Twenties with his amazing play on the field, while bringing happiness to those suffering through the Great Depression with his charismatic smile and larger-than-life personality. So, it came as no surprise that at the end of this election process, the consensus for the latter award was the Great Bambino.

The award, presented to his family posthumously, is a very impressive display, standing 18” tall and weighing a robust 38 pounds. The unique design, mostly in cast metal, features a baseball attached to a circular, abstract arm emblazoned with a large MLB logo. Engraved in the center of the piece is “Baseball’s Most Memorable Personality.” On the baseplate of the award is a plaque reading “George Herman ‘Babe’ Ruth” along with the teams and seasons in which he played. The plaque ends with “Elected to the Hall of Fame 1936.” Balfour was the manufacturer of this award, which is noted on the underside. The Most Memorable Personality Award shows light to moderate aging and wear, but otherwise appears in outstanding condition. Includes a letter of provenance from the Ruth Family.
