With Hall of Famers Len Dawson behind center and Hank Stram roaming the sideline, the Kansas City Chiefs finished the 1969 regular season with a record of 11-3. The Chiefs were second in the American Football League in scoring while allowing the fewest points. In the playoffs, Kansas City defeated the New York Jets and the Oakland Raiders to represent the AFL in Super Bowl IV. Against the dreaded "Purple People Eaters" defense of the Minnesota Vikings in the big game played January 11, 1970, the Chiefs won handily, 23-7. Later that year, the AFL officially merged with the NFL to form one league with two conferences. Presented here is a spectacular Super Bowl IV ring issued to the Chiefs' team dentist, according to our source.
The face of the 10-karat gold ring features a large, one-carat diamond surrounded by 10 smaller diamonds, all in a football motif set in a red stone. Around the perimeter reads "KANSAS CITY CHIEFS 1969 WORLD CHAMPIONS" in raised relief. One shank has "BROCK" (recipient's surname) at the top above the result of the AFL title game (“CHIEFS 17 RAIDERS 7") with the word "CONFIDENCE" at the bottom. The other side has the Super Bowl score ("CHIEFS 23 - VIKINGS 7") and above the Lombardi Trophy with the word "POISE" at the bottom. The size 11-3/4 ring weighs 40 grams and has "JOSTENS 10K" engraved inside the band. Early Super Bowls are extremely scarce, and rarely do they come in such fine shape. The ring shows light wear without the typical dings often found on a half-century piece of jewelry.
