Thurman Munson’s tragic death in 1979 remains one of the darkest days in Yankees history. Today, Munson’s No. “15” has been retired and in deference to his memory, Munson’s former locker was relocated to a place of honor in the Yankees Museum at the new Yankee Stadium; a silent tribute to one of the greatest and most beloved players in team history.

Tributes poured in from athletes and celebrities around the country at the time of Munson’s passing, including a heartfelt message from none other than Muhammad Ali. Presented here is the original August 4, 1979 Western Union telegram sent by Muhammad Ali to the Munson family. The telegram contains Ali’s personal condolences regarding Thurman's passing and was read at Munson’s funeral at the direction of Munson’s widow Diana. The message reads as follows, "I wish to express my sincere sympathy at this time of your sorrow Thurman Munson was a credit not only to baseball but to the American way of life and a great leader to the children of our country my prayers will be with you, deepest sympathy. Muhammad Ali".

The sentiment expressed within the offered telegram encapsulates the feeling of loss that enveloped the country after Thurman's death. In a 2008 article on MLB.com Diana Munson recalled the impact of Ali’s gesture at that most difficult time. “(Ali) was so humble and amazing. His words were so heartfelt about Thurman,” she stated. Includes letter of provenance from Diana Munson. EX-MT condition.
