Offered here is a signed and inscribed news service photo depicting the aftermath of Mickey Mantle's famed 565-foot blast launched from Washington's Griffith Stadium in 1953. Measuring approximately 6-3/4" x 8-1/2", this black-and-white photo reveals a smiling Mantle holding and pointing to the sphere retrieved by a D.C. area youth. The boyish Oklahoman is all smiles in admiration of the ball's dent and abrasions that resulted from his mighty wallop. In black marker, Mantle's vintage inscription reads: "To George Hutten - My Best Wishes and lots of luck - Mickey Mantle." The scripting, partially obscured by the lettering on Mantle's uniform, still projects about "7-8" strength. On the reverse, an "ASSOCIATED PRESS" stamping is accompanied by an "APRIL 20, 1953" stamping, as well as some penciled notations that suggest the photo was republished after subsequent Mantle drives of comparable distances. Included is the original typewritten caption. This home run was immortalized in the 1961 Topps series by card No. 406 ("MANTLE BLASTS 565 FT. HOME RUN"). The unevenly trimmed photo remains EX/MT, with crazing and some nearly indiscernible creases throughout. Full LOA from PSA/DNA (AG01413).
