Presented here is a 1951 hardcover “Jubilee Edition” of The Official Encyclopedia of Baseball signed by twenty-six members of the 1951 World Champion New York Yankees team. Spread across the inside front cover and fly page, the signatures include HOFers Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Johnny Mize, Casey Stengel and the rest of that memorable squad. Worthy of special attention is the exemplary version of Mantle’s rookie signature, which he would skillfully finesse in the years to come. It’s pairing with Joe DiMaggio’s signature from his swan song season makes this a truly special item, one infinitely scarcer than oft seen team balls from the same season.
