Few moments in baseball history have managed to so wondrously merge the seemingly competing elements of fact and mythology as well as Babe Ruth's "Called Shot" in the 1932 World Series. An entire cottage industry sprang up - if not immediately, then certainly over the years - in debating the merits of this heady moment when the most famous player in the game made his most audacious gesture. Often, the determination about how you felt about it was heavily influenced by whether you were on the giving or receiving end of his historic blast.

This lot neatly touches on that notion. It includes two objects that present first hand confirmation of Ruth’s famous gesture by a man who witnessed it first hand, Ruth’s 1932 Yankees teammate Joe Sewell. Lot includes an amazing two-page, handwritten and signed letter from Sewell, to a fan, recalling the event: "'Yes, Babe Ruth pointed to centerfield and hit the next pitch out of the park through a tree loaded with small boys who came to see the game.” Sewell provides incredible additional details of the event and closes with, “Hope this will clear up some of your thinking on the home run if there was some Doubt." Accompanying the letter is a near-pristine Joe Sewell single-signed OAL (Brown) with his full name “Joseph Wheeler Sewell,” date notation “1932” on the sweet spot and additional notation, “Babe Ruth Called His Shot” on the panel below.  Each item includes a full LOA from PSA/DNA (AG01378 & AG01388).
