Regarded as one of the greatest players of his era, Julius "Dr. J" Erving began his pro career with the Virginia Squires and the New York Nets of the American Basketball Association and was perhaps the main catalyst for the ABA-NBA merger in 1976. Standing 6' 7" with crazy hops, the “The Doctor” dominated games with his high-flying, acrobatic dunks as well as his pinpoint, mid-range shooting. After arrived on the NBA scene, he played 11 seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers and led them to the NBA championship in 1983. Erving was an All-Star every year he played in the NBA and was named the league's MVP in 1981. He scored 30,026 points in his combined ABA/NBA career, which puts him in 7th place in the history of professional basketball.

This lot features one of Dr. J's earliest NBA gamers, dating to his second season with the Sixers in 1977-78. Philadelphia only wore this style one season, making any example highly coveted by collectors. Sporting proper tagging on the left front tail, the white mesh jersey includes the Wilson [size] 42 manufacturer's tag on the left front tail complete with washing instructions. The front of the crew-neck jersey displays "Sixers" in thick blue-on-white-on-red tackle twill lettering, with his iconic No. "6" in vibrant blue tackle twill outlined in red. Elastic red, white and blue trim outline the collar and arms, while an even more patriotic piping runs down both seams emblazoned with four white stars on each side. A slightly arched "ERVING" is sewn in blue tackle twill across the upper back above his uniform number “6” that is shown in blue-on-red tackle twill measuring 8” tall. The jersey exhibits excellent evidence of wear with slight puckering to the front letters, stretching at the collar, and light pilling throughout the mesh fabric. The numbers and letters are all-original and there are no condition issues to speak of. An outstanding early Dr. J Sixers jersey, one that ranks among his finest NBA gamers to hit the auction block.

Includes letter from MEARS graded a perfect A10.
