Featured here is running back Charles White's USC Trojans game-worn road jersey from his junior season in 1978. White was a consensus All-America
selection and Pac-10 Player of the Year in '78 (1,859 yards & 18
TD's) before taking home the Heisman Trophy and just about every other
college player of the year award in 1979. He capped each year with an
MVP performance in the Rose Bowl. As a senior in '79 he rushed for 2,050
yards with 19 TD's before moving on to the NFL.
The white nylon mesh jersey has cardinal and gold striped
sleeves and White's No. 12 screen-printed front and back in cardinal. with six buttons on the bottom for the crotch flap. Both
sleeves have been custom torn at the underarms; game images of White indicate he preferred his sleeves to be slit-cut. In between the front numbers is a foot-long team repair, with a smaller repair below that. There are four more team repairs in the right shoulder/clavicle. The
rest of the jersey shows solid wear with a few minor tears in the fabric. The manufacturer's tagging (W.A. Goodman & Sons based on Lot 470) is absent from the shirttail. You will be hard-pressed to find a better example of a late 70's USC gamer, especially one hailing from one of
the storied program's greatest ball carriers. According to the consignor, this
jersey was procured directly from White following the '78 season.
Provenance: This lot originates from a gentleman who has enjoyed a
long and successful career in Hollywood as an agent for many well-known
athletes and entertainers. His professional and personal network enabled
him to amass a significant collection of memorabilia, nearly all of
which was given to him directly from the athletes and entertainers
themselves. All of these items are being introduced to the marketplace
here for the first time. While our consignor remains anonymous, SCP
Auctions will issue an LOA for each game used item attesting to its
player-direct provenance.
