This offered Olympic bronze medal from the 1968 Grenoble
(France) Winter Games is one of the finest examples available in the hobby, presented to a member of the third-place Canadian Men's Ice Hockey team. The Grenoble Winter Olympics allowed East and West Germany to participate separately for the first time, and
also marked the first the IOC mandated drug and gender testing of
competitors. 37 nations participated with 1158 athletes across 35 events
in just five sports. Norway won the most medals, the first time Russia did
not lead the medal count since they began competing in the Winter
Olympics in 1956. The Soviet Union did, however, continue their dominance on the ice, beating Czechoslovakia in the hockey final for the gold medal. Canada defeated Sweden in the bronze medal game.
This rare 3rd place winner's bronze medal is made of
pure bronze, measuring 60 mm in diameter, 4 mm thick and weighing 128
grams. Designed by Roger Excoffon, the obverse has "GRENOBLE 1968" and
the '68 Winter Games logo within the French legend (Xemes JEUX
OLYMPIQUES D.HIVER"). The reverse has a rendition of a hockey player skater in
movement with "HOCKEY SUR GLACE" ('Ice Hockey' in French). It was the
first time winner's medals marked the sport on the reverse. "BR" engraved on bottom edge. All winner's medals from the '68 Winter Games came
with a multicolor ribbon. This one is all-original in remarkable, problem-free condition measuring 18" long (36" if cut and fully stretched). The medal itself displays light
handling and presents in NM-MT condition and comes in its original black presentation box emblazoned with the Grenoble Games emblem.
