This lovely cast bronze medal was issued to participants at the 1960 Rome Summer Olympic Games. A total of 5,396 athletes participated, according to the Olympic Museum website. Designed by Emilio Greco and minted by Bertoni of Milan, it measures 55 mm in diameter and 4-5 mm thick and weighs 78 grams. The obverse shows a nude female torchbearer in the foreground with the Olympic rings in the background. The reverse shows a flight of eagles soaring over the stadium of Rome. Few participation medals issued at any Olympics featured an original patina with such dimension. One of the highlights of these 1960 Games was a young boxer named Cassius Clay winning a boxing gold medal in the Light Heavyweight division. Medal comes in NM condition with light handling.
