Presented here is a rare Olympic gold medal from the 1936 Berlin Summer Games. A total of 320 gold medals were minted (same number of bronze and silver), making any winner’s medal from Berlin a special treat for the hobby. Made of gilt silver with gold plating (as are all post-1912 first place winner medals), it is designed by Giuseppe Cassioli and measures 55 mm in diameter and 3 mm thick, weighing 74 grams. The obverse features Nike, goddess of victory, seated above stadium holding winner's crown and palm branch with "XI. OLYMPIADE BERLIN 1936" scripted on right. The reverse shows a winner carried by jubilant athletes. Well-preserved in both color and texture, the medal presents in Near Mint overall condition with some light tarnishing. The minter “B.H. Mayer Pforzheim” and the medal’s gilt silver hallmark “990” are engraved on the bottom edge. Although the recipient and event are unknown (no 1936 winner’s medal provided this info), the medal survives as an extraordinary Olympic artifact for the most esteemed collector.
