Upon leading the San Francisco 49ers to their emphatic Super Bowl XXIX victory and earning game MVP honors, Steve Young got the proverbial "monkey off his back" as he quoted so eloquently in the post-game celebration. The fleet-of-foot southpaw out of Brigham Young may have lived in Joe Montana's shadow for several years as his backup and eventual successor, but the 1994 season forever cemented his legacy in 49ers lore. In 1996, Young missed five regular season games due to injury, but the 49ers were 9-3 in games he started and won another division title, before bowing out to the Packers in the divisional round of the playoffs. Presented here is Young’s game-worn and signed road white jersey from the ’96 season.
The size 44 Reebok white mesh jersey has the 49ers' 50th anniversary patch on the left chest. The appropriate “PRO LINE 1996” manufacturer and year tagging appears on the left shirttail with the patented “SF” logo. All lettering and numbering come in red on gold and black tackle twill, the numbers having the shadowbox design. The SF and Reebok logos adorn each sleeve. Young has autographed the back on his number "8" in 7-8/10 black marker. The heavily laundered jersey displays solid game wear throughout with evident pilling and fraying. Terrific piece from a Hall of Fame legend and true class act who will always hold a special place in the hearts of Niners fans.
