Now retired, Jamal Williams had a 13-year NFL career as a nose/defensive tackle and spent most of it (1998-2009) with the San Diego Chargers. He finished with 271 tackles, 86 assists and 13 sacks for his career, plus an interception that he returned 14 yards for a touchdown as a rookie. This lot features Williams’s 2007 San Diego Chargers game-worn road jersey, which has been photo-matched (Getty 79175827) to the AFC Championship against the New England Patriots on Jan. 20, 2008. San Diego lost 21-12, ending a fine season for the Bolts during which Williams recorded 32 tackles, seven assists and two sacks.
The Reebok, size 56 mesh jersey includes all the proper tags on the front left tail including one on the inside back collar that reads “07-56” to indicate the season and jersey size. Team name “CHARGERS” is embroidered in blue and yellow across the front, centered perfectly above Williams’s uniform number “76” that appears in blue tackle twill outlined in Charger blue and yellow. The jersey shows heavy wear with several team repairs throughout the shoulder area where the jersey was stitched from rips sustained during game action. The NFL shield is sewn into the bottom of the V-neck collar and the Reebok patch is also sewn onto both sleeves and is positioned just below Williams’s number “76” in similar tackle twill fashion as his number on the front, as well as the Chargers’ lightning bolt logo which appears in yellow tackle twill outlined in both Charger blue and Navy blue. His nameplate – “WILLIAMS” in Navy blue letters – is sewn across the back of the shoulders and rest right on top of his uniform number “76” which stretches 12” tall.
According to the consignor (one of the most passionate San Diego Chargers collectors around), Williams wore this jersey for several road games in 2007 and 2008 as well, including San Diego's 23-17 Wild Card Playoff win over the Colts on Jan. 3, 2009. Photo evidence seems to back this up. A patch over the upper left chest has been removed, which was most
likely the "GU" patch honoring late NFL great Gene Upshaw who headed the
NFLPA for many years. All NFL players wore this patch in the early part
of the 2008 season.
