The 1994 NFL season marked a great one for the San Diego Chargers. Not only did the Bolts compile an 11-5 record and earn the AFC West Division crown, but they advanced to the Super Bowl after beating the Pittsburgh Steelers, 17-13, in the AFC title game. It would mark the team's only Super Bowl appearance and much of the team's success rested squarely on the massive shoulders of superstar linebacker Junior Seau, who led the team with 124 solo tackles. The then-25-year-old tackling machine added 5.5 sacks for good measure that season. Junior went on to have one of the greatest and longest careers in NFL history at the linebacker position, and his legacy will forever be entrenched in his Samoan and Southern California roots--from Oceanside High School to USC to the Chargers. May he forever rest in peace.
This lot features the late Junior Seau's 1994 San Diego Chargers game-worn road throwback jersey. It is actually photo-matched (right down to the front mesh holes) to their Sept. 25 away game against the Oakland Raiders in which Seau's two sacks helped the Chargers escape the Black Hole with a 26-24 victory. The white nylon mesh jersey, size 50, boasts the proper Russell Athletic manufacturer's tag on the left front tail next to a washing instructions tag and two flag tags: "100% NYLON" and 4" EXTRA BODY LENGTH. The V-neck jersey boasts the NFL's embroidered "75th Anniversary" patch on the left front shoulder, just above Seau's heat-pressed uniform number "55" in Charger blue outlined in yellow, which also appears on each sleeve right below the Chargers' trademark lightning bolt emblem. The back of the gamer also shows Seau's uniform number in like fashion with his last name "SEAU" appearing in heat-pressed blue letters on a sewn-on white mesh nameplate across the shoulders. The jersey reflects solid game usage with contact marks on the back as well as some deterioration of the letters in his last name
The consignor is one of the most passionate and knowledgeable San Diego Chargers collectors in the hobby, and he has provided two 8” by 10” photo-matches from the 9/25/94 Raiders game (including Getty 283322). He attests to this jersey being given from Seau to his teammate Dennis Gibson right after the game. By all measures, this is perhaps one of the finest Seau gamers to surface.
